TIDY UP: CREATING A STRESS-FREE SPACE TIDY UP: CREATING A STRESS-FREE SPACE

Unkempt spaces can feel like chaos. Do you ever feel stuck due to an untidy space?

According to clinical psychologist Dr. Dawn Potter, cleaning helps restore a sense of control, which can set the tone for the rest of your day and reduce stress. When you come home to a mess, it’s just one more thing to stress about. Tidying up empowers and enables you to enjoy your space, and can even make it easier to fall asleep

Our internal lives are often impacted by our external environments, so today we’re sharing three simple hacks on how to keep your home tidy. It’s easier than you think!

  1. Start small. Overwhelmed by the mess and not sure where to start? Pick one task and complete it. Completing one task will help you build momentum to finish the rest.
  2. Create a tidying habit and do it as you go – your future self will thank you even if you don’t want to clean up right now! When you finish using a dish, wash it right away. When you finish watching a movie, fold the blanket and put the pillows back.. Make it a habit to clean up after yourself as you go along.
  3. Downsize. If you have less things, there is less to clean, less waste and less stress. If you have kids, make a “donation game.” Make two piles: keep and donate. For every 10 toys they get rid of, go out for a treat together (this works with adults too!). Instead of viewing it as work, think of it as a fun way to spend time together!

Your external space affects your internal life, so take these steps toward feeling good inside and out!
